Mugello hosted its first races before World War I; however these were staged on open roads. In later years illustrious racers such as Alberto Ascari and Enzo Ferrari contributed to the circuit's golden years, which lasted through to the mid-fifties. Current owner of the Mugello circuit is the Ferrari company.

In 1970 the original street circuit, which at one stage extended to over 66 kilometres, was shortened and converted into an autodromo, which in turn provided the basis for the current facility. This has been progressively developed, with the result being the thoroughly modern Mugello complex used annually for world championship motorcycle racing, and for testing by Ferrari.
