Construction of the DEKRA Lausitzring, completed in 2000, was rooted in plans drawn up under the final years of the GDR government for an alternative circuit in the greater Berlin area. Although the fall of the Berlin Wall delayed the project until after German unification, the circuit eventually came to fruition in the Brandenburg area. The final result is a highly modern combination of oval circuit and grand prix race track which offers a multitude of layouts.

The excellent infrastructure of the DEKRA Lausitzring is based on the American model of high-speed circuits, thus making it particularly suitable for Indycar racing. The circuit regularly hosts the DTM and IDM series.
