The Wachauring is located near Melk in Lower Austria. It is easily reachable from the A1 motorway. Races have been held at the circuit for several decades. The Wachauring has hosted rallycross and autocross events since 1973. In 1997, the facility was modified and given a completely asphalted circuit.

Since then, the Ring has had two basic variants: the racing circuit, which itself can be driven in numerous configurations and is up to 1,150 metres long, and the rallycross ring with its gravel track. The facility also boasts a driving technology centre belonging to the ÖAMTC. As well as the various racing series that hold their competitions here, the Wachauring is also popular with well-known tyre manufacturers, for whom the circuit, which can be artificially sprayed with water and features many possible layouts, is an ideal test facility.
