Opened in 1969, the Salzburgring is a permanent racetrack lying in a narrow, alpine valley near Salzburg. One year after its opening, the circuit was the scene of legendary Austrian Formula One driver Jochen Rindt's last ever motorsport race. Many of the sports biggest names, including Graham Hill and Jacky Ickx, could often be seen at the Ring in the 1970s.

Nowadays the number of major motorsport events is limited to five per year. However, the circuit regularly holds other events, such as car launches by automobile manufacturers, driver training courses and club meetings. Plans are also in place to build a competence centre, which will enhance the motorbike test track at the circuit.
