The circuit in Yeongam is situated in the extreme south of Korea, and forms part of a project which will see the circuit surrounded by a thriving harbor town. The enormity of the project means that the circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke, will be used only semi-permanently. The scenic portion of the circuit runs alongside the ocean so as to double as a harbor promenade, lending races a maritime theme.

The facility, which has a spectator capacity of 135 000, made its debut on the Formula 1 calendar in 2010, with the grand prix being won by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso after a dramatic wet race.
