Thailand

Up until 2001, when Malaysia's Alex Yoong made his debut for Minardi, there had only been one Formula One driver in Southeast Asia: Prince Bira of Siam, who drove in what was the newly-formed Grand Prix series in the 1950s, after the kingdom had already been renamed Thailand in 1939.
Despite a relatively minor official presence since then, Thai investors have been increasingly active in Formula One in recent years. The increasing popularity of motorsport goes hand in hand with the desire to produce more Thai racing drivers who are capable of establishing themselves at the pinnacle of the sport. Thailand also boosts a promising Moto2 rider in the form of Ratthapark Wilairot.
