"VIR", as it is known by insiders, is a familiar term among motorsport friends. Many fans of virtual motorsport have already ended up in the crash barriers lining the notorious corners at the Virginia International Raceway. However, the circuit's prominence is not reserved for video games: many true racing greats have also despaired of the bends in the past. There is a good reason for the "NASCAR Bend" bearing its now familiar name: one race in 1966 saw several drivers get into difficulty at this corner, which features a decreasing radius.

Although the circuit was closed for decades, it was never forgotten. The extraordinary layout, which allows six variants, always gave the "VIR" a legendary feel. When the circuit was reopened by a private investor in 2000 and converted to a form of country club, it became a trailblazer for this business model, which has prospered in recent years. The circuit remains the venue for professional races, including the Superbike championship. The "VIR" is also highly regarded as a test circuit by many NASCAR teams in the USA.
