This, the first asphalted oval track in the USA, was built in the 1930s after a hurricane devastated the area, and was once known as the "Indianapolis of the East". During the 60s and 70s, Thompson International Speedway grew into a legendary stager of American motorsport.

In the interim the road course - which once formed part of the facility - fell into disuse, and now serves as pit complex and administration center. One of the big successes of the oft-renovated oval is its World Series of Auto Racing - which comprises three days of racing for 600 cars and 15 different classes. The upgraded complex also includes a golf course.
