Rockingham Speedway was opened in 1965 as the North Carolina Motor Speedway, and for many years hosted NASCAR. It was renamed after its location in Rockingham in North Carolina in 2007, but is also known by the nickname 'The Rock'. The Speedway is a D-oval with steep gradients, while the infield incorporates a road course and a kart track.

Rockingham hosted its last major NASCAR race in 2004, with many teams since using the oval for testing. Rockingham was also regularly for development of the Car of Tomorrow. Smaller race series still stage rounds at Rockingham, with the venue also being popular as film and TV production location.
