The Circuito de Jerez, constructed in 1986, was the scene of that year's Spanish Grand Prix, with the winner being the legendary Ayrton Senna. When the event was switched to Barcelona is 1991, Jerez hosted the European Grand Prix for a period.

The circuit in Andalucía is viewed as 'interesting' by drivers, while its peaceful yet picturesque setting means it has largely remained a well-kept secret. Thus it is not flooded by masses of spectators although its grandstands have a capacity of over 100 000 seats. The circuit, renovated and re-asphalted in 2005, is a favored Formula 1 test venue.
