The Yas Marina Circuit was completed on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island in 2009. It hosts the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Formula 1's first and only twilight race. Designed by the German circuit architect Hermann Tilke, the circuit features numerous innovations, such as airbags manufactured from synthetic materials in place of traditional tyre barriers. In addition, gravel traps have been replaced by asphalted run-off area, with the largest of these running directly under a grandstand to provide fans with a heightened motorsport experience.

Another novelty of the circuit, which can be divided into two shorter layouts, is its so-called 'hanging corners'. In these the angle of apex falls away, increasing g-forces and facilitating higher cornering speeds.
