When the circuit in Zhuhai was opened in 1996, it was the first permanent racetrack in China. It is located on the south-east coast and soon attracted teams from the metropolis of Hong Kong. Built by an Australian engineering company, it is designed to host major events, regularly hosting FIA GT championships and races in the Asian Formula V6 series.

The track itself offers many overtaking opportunities, resulting from the combination of fast sections, hard braking into tight bends, and the subsequent acceleration out of the corners and onto long straights.
