When the plans for a world-class racetrack with the Road Atlanta layout took shape, the town of Braselton, situated 40 kilometres north-east of Atlanta, was regarded as a figurehead for American motorsport for a decade. However, when the circuit was ruined by mismanagement, Road Atlanta vanished into thin air just a few years later. The current owner woke the sleeping giant when he purchased, renovated and added chicanes to the circuit in 1996. Once the track was back to FIA standards, it was not long before the major American racing series returned to Braselton.

Nowadays, when the cars in the American Le Mans Series or bikes in the American Superbike Championship tear round the circuit, an average 80,000 spectators per race weekend are able to marvel at the legendary "Esses" or the notorious, winding downhill passages that have made Road Atlanta a permanent feature of many video games.
