The Autodromo in Imola is one of the most iconic circuits in European motorsport and was a venue for Formula One for almost 30 years in a row. As the circuit is located close to Maranello, the headquarters of Ferrari, it is often referred to as the home track of the Scuderia. The first Grand Prix winner in Imola was Brazilian Nelson Piquet in 1980. This was the only race held under the title of the Italian Grand Prix. In subsequent years, Imola was often the venue for the San Marino Grand Prix, as the Italian Grand Prix was held solely at the circuit in Monza.

Following the final race in 2006, the circuit was closed to allow comprehensive modifications. The result is a modern facility, with an improved infrastructure and modified layout, which makes the circuit faster and has led to the return of major motorsport series.
