The Smolenskring is situated near Safonovo in western Russia, approximately 90 kilometers east of Smolensk and 250 kilometers west of the capital Moscow. Construction commenced in 2007, with the first international championship to visit the circuit being the FIA European Truck Racing Championship in August 2010.

The Smolenskring was designed by Hermann Tilke, with the German circuit architect and his team following the contours of the area to provide the circuit with fast sections, straights and a variety of corner combinations. The Smolenksring has to date mainly been used for truck racing, national touring car events and track days. However, during winter it can be used for snow and ice training courses.
