Kyalami translates as 'My Home' in one of South Africa's eleven official languages, and the circuit situated midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria played home to the South African Grand Prix between 1967 and 1993. The final grand prix, won by Alain Prost, was simultaneously the last Formula 1 race on African soil.

Since then Kyalami's skyline has changed, with residential and commercial developments encroaching on its borders and fewer events being staged, primarily due to noise restrictions. However, in 2009 the Superbike World Championship returned to Kyalami, enabling the circuit to prove it had lost none of its sporting ambience.
