Thunderhill Raceway Park is run by the San Francisco division of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), which stages both amateur and professional races at the circuit. As well as sports cars, the racetrack focuses primarily on bike races, which have become a permanent fixture on the season calendar. The track itself offers a bit of everything: it twists and turns, with tight corners followed swiftly by very fast straights.

The design allows a multitude of circuit variants, which are constantly being redesigned by the organisers and adjusted to suit the specific requirements of a wide range of motorsport events. Thunderhill Raceway Park is also the venue for the longest motorsport marathon in the USA, the "25 Hours of Thunderhill", which traditionally takes place on the first weekend in December.
