Not to be confused with the Superspeedway of the same name, the opening of the Talladega Gran Prix Raceway at Munford, Alabama, in 1985 was intended to provide a circuit for local racing enthusiasts to put their private racing cars and bikes to the test in the style of a Grand Prix driver. For this reason, the circuit is not lined by hard barriers that could pose a risk to motorcyclists.

The circuit was completely resurfaced in 2007 and the layout was also subject to minor modifications. As well as tests, professional sports car races are now held at the circuit, which has always been regarded by insiders as extremely well-balanced and full of character. The many long corners and short straights demand greater driving skill than pure engine power.
