The racetrack near the metropolis of Shanghai is a remarkable example of the economic boom in China. It has been a permanent fixture on the Formula One calendar since 2004, when Rubens Barrichello won the first race in a Ferrari. In the same race, Michael Schumacher set the track record, which still stands today.

Designed by Hermann Tilke, much of the circuit architecture reflects the region's culture. The paddock, one of the most modern in the world, was designed to fit in with its surroundings, while the track itself is based on a Chinese character, which can also be found in the city name of Shanghai (literally meaning "above the sea"). Another feature is the so-called "Snail Corner", the increasingly tight radius of which is based on the shape of a snail shell.
